If you are reading this, you are using a computer that is functioning. Maybe not as well as you'd like it to function, but functioning, none the less.

Windows 7 was released to lots of fanfare and new promises of simplicity. And I can tell you from first hand experience that Windows 7 is overall, a better operating system in many ways than XP and in some ways, even better than Vista with Service Pack 2 installed.

Do you want Windows 7? Of course, its the latest and greatest software. Do you need it? Probably not, and if you are considering Windows 7 for your business or to run business applications, wait to purchase and install Windows 7 until after the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is released. After Service Pack 1 is released for 7, buy a version of Windows 7 that includes Service Pack 1 with its improvements and go from there. Using Microsoft history as a guide, Service Pack 1 will likely be released in the next three - six months.

But the real question is this: does your present computer and operating system ( XP or Vista) do what you need and want it to do? If it does, there is no need to move to Windows 7 or to replace your computer.

And if your computer or OS does not do what you want it do do, you need to take a hard look at the cost to install 7 on your current computer versus the cost to buy a new computer with 7 already on it. XP cannot be upgraded to 7 - a complete new install is required, which means time, money and data risk. Vista, in some cases, can be upgraded to 7 but Vista up-graders have reported several critical issues and failures when they tried to upgrade to 7 so the path is not proven.

So do you want and need 7? Of course, but is it work the time and money? Think about it. And then, if you are a business, even if you are willing to spent the time and money to go to 7 now, wait until after Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is released in the next 3 - 6 months.

Until then, make sure your XP, Vista or 7 machine is fully updated and configured properly. A properly configured XP, Vista or 7 machine will not only be fun to operate, but will offer you great service and value.
